What you can do on a turn
Draw one card from the stock or take the upcard, then discard one card. You cannot discard the upcard you just took. Knock, instead of a face-up discard, when the 10 cards you keep are worth 10 or less.
Gin Rummy is a two-player melding game. Draw one card, discard one, and knock when the unmatched cards you keep total 10 points or less.
If you already play Crazy Eights, the shared discard will feel familiar, but Gin is won by knocking, not by emptying your hand. After a knock, the lower deadwood scores the difference, gin adds 25, and an undercut adds 10.
